Information for parents and carers

(updated May 2021)

All students are currently expected to attend school in person as normal, unless they are required to self-isolate or quarantine for Covid-19 reasons.

For students who are abroad, and facing challenges to return due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, we will provide wherever possible remote learning via Microsoft Teams for the period they are abroad.

Remote education provision: information for parents and carers

This information is for Willowfield students and their parents and carers. It explains what happens with remote learning and teaching when students have to stay at home and study when national or local Covid-19 restrictions are in place. For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to students at home

We aim, wherever possible, to provide every student studying from home due to local or national restrictions with livestream remote teaching from the first day of those restrictions being in place.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

On the first day of remote learning at home, we expect every child to log into Microsoft Teams livestream remote lessons on a laptop, stand-alone computer or a tablet. If a teacher is not able to livestream teach because they are absent due to sickness, then a student should log into Microsoft Teams Assignments and complete the lesson work set by their teacher.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have made some adaptations in some subjects. For example, in some practical subjects where specialist equipment or resources are required for some topics, e.g. in PE, Cooking and Nutrition, Design Technology, we might teach alternative practical or theoretical topics. We might also choose to change the order of the units of learning that we teach over a term, and these changes will be made in the curriculum overviews for parents and carers on the school website.


Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

We are using Microsoft Teams meetings for livestream remote teaching and for independent learning (homework) and work for lessons that cannot be livestream taught, we use Microsoft Teams Assignments. To log in your child needs to:

  1. Search the Internet for and click on ‘sign in’
  2. Type in your computer username (This is your first initial (first letter of your first name), then your surname, then the year you started at Willowfield followed by the school email address. You should have a copy of your username stuck in your planner. For example:
  3. Type in your password (If you don’t remember your password, phone the school main reception on 020 8527 4065 or email
  4. Click on the Teams blue icon on the left-hand side of the screen and use the Web app
  5. Go to the calendar on the left-hand side of your screen and click on it
  6. Click on ‘Join’ for your lesson if your teacher has invited you to join a remote lesson
  7. If there is no livestream lesson, go to Teams Assignments on the left-hand side and find the work set for your lesson, click on the tasks and complete all




If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education? 

We recognise that some students may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those students to access remote education:

It is essential that every child has access to a suitable device with a working microphone for all of their lessons, for at least 5 hours a school day. If a child does not have access to a laptop, stand-alone computer or tablet for every lesson every school day, and a parent/carer cannot provide them with one, they should inform the school.

If a child has access to a device for all of their lesson each day, but a parent/carer cannot provide them with internet access, they need to contact the school.

Where there is genuine need for a device or a dongle for internet access, we will try and lend or issue these, if possible. Once parents/carers have informed us of their requirements, we will inform them of our decision and if we can help, parents/carers will need to come into school to sign our loan/issue agreement and collect the device/dongle. If this is not possible, we might be able to make alternative arrangements for the collection.

If it is not possible for a child to use Microsoft Teams for any reason we will provide paper-based learning resources on a temporary basis until this is resolved.

Parents/carers can phone or email the school if they need our help with a device or a dongle. Parents/carers can email the IT Support Team if they have an issue with technology.


How will my child be taught remotely?

We use the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

We use livestream remote teaching through Microsoft Teams for 5 one-hour remote lessons a day for all year groups. The teacher will teach using their video and usually a PowerPoint presentation, with audio, video and other visual resources. The lesson may also be accompanied by worksheets or interactive links to lesson resources. Students may have a paper-based resource that they use alongside remote lessons, for example a novel or a poetry anthology. We do not expect children to print off lesson resources, but they should record lesson notes on paper or online for future reference.




Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We expect all students to follow their usual school timetable and engage with our remote education provision every lesson or activity, every school day.  We expect parents and carers to support the school in getting their child to attend and engage fully with their remote learning. Our policy sets out our expectations as follows:


  • Check their school email accounts for lesson invites and Teams posts often every day
  • Be contactable during the school day
  • Complete work to the deadline set by teachers
  • Seek help if they need it, from teachers or teaching support staff
  • Alert teachers if they are not able to log in or complete work

Parents and carers

Wherever possible, parents/carers should maintain a regular and familiar routine, using the current timetable and timings of the school day to support this. Parents/carers should:

-support their children in their reading as far as they are able, so that they continue to read their home reading book or access online reading resources

-support their children’s work as far as they are able, by discussing the work together and making appropriate plans for its completion. This can include providing a suitable place to work and encouraging their children to focus

-make the school aware if their child is sick or otherwise cannot complete work, or if they have technical issues

-seek help from the school if they need it, contacting the school by email or phone

-be respectful when raising any concerns or making any complaints.

Remote learning student protocols 


How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Teachers will take a remote register every lesson and if students do not attend and engage in the first and/or second lesson of each day, then we will send a text alert to parents and carers. Non-attendance to remote lessons will also be followed up the same day by your child’s Achievement Leader by phone. Where attendance to and engagement in remote lessons is a concern, the Achievement Leader will contact parents and carers directly to discuss this. If the concerns continue, the Senior Leadership Team will take action.


How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

Teachers will check learning in remote lessons often through questioning and low stakes assessment methods like quizzing. They will also give verbal feedback on students’ draft and completed work during lessons. Assessment assignments will be set, marked, returned and improved upon according to the remote learning assessment calendar. Details of this will be published each half-term.



Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

We will work with families to deliver remote education for students with SEND by enabling teachers to adapt and differentiate lesson resources and teaching to meet the needs of individual students remotely. We will also regularly contact families to discuss remote learning and any adjustments that need to be made for students with SEND. If additional support is needed by SEND students, we will discuss this on a case by case basis.



Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, we expect students to log into Microsoft Teams and join their lessons remotely, if they are well and able to do so.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Teachers will invite self-isolating students to their live lessons in school via Microsoft Teams and they will include them in the same learning activities as students in the classroom as far as possible.

Instructions for using Microsoft Teams Assignments

If your child has access to online learning at home, they will need to log into Microsoft Office Teams Classes and go to every one of their virtual Classes to find work set in ‘Assignments’.

Students should login using their school computer username. This is in the form of first initial + surname + intake year, e.g. if I am a student and my name is James Francis and I joined the school in year 7 in 2018 my username would be .
